The Great Thanksgiving Listen: Preserve Your Family History Long After The Pumpkin Pie Is Gone

Nov 23, 2016

Since 2003, StoryCorps has given more than 100,000 Americans a quiet booth and a facilitator to record meaningful conversations with one another about who they are, what they've learned in life and how they want to be remembered.

This Thanksgiving, the pioneering oral history project is partnering with NPR and Boise State Public Radio to launch its most ambitious initiative to date: The Great Thanksgiving Listen.

The Great Thanksgiving Listen is a national audio project to engage people of all ages in the act of listening. Download the StoryCorps app and interview an elder, family member or friend. In one holiday weekend, we will preserve the stories of an entire generation.

The StoryCorps app allows anyone to record and submit stories to StoryCorps. The app also provides useful tips for preparing and conducting interviews. These stories will be submitted to StoryCorps and archived at the Folk Life Center at the Library of Congress.

StoryCorps is also working with teachers to encourage high school students to interview an elder by hosting this helpful toolkit of lesson plans, multimedia resources and interview tips.

If you're from Idaho and you make a recording, please let us know! Boise State Public Radio is interested in featuring local family interviews in a run-up project to the winter holidays. Email laceydaley@boisestate.edu if you're interested in collaborating with us.
