The Treefort Music Festival is preparing for what will likely be its biggest year since it began in 2012. And as it grows, new elements of the festival continue to emerge. This year attendees will see another branch of the festival with a focus on food issues. Tara Morgan is one of the organizers of Foodfort. She says that aspect of the festival will feature two components.
“For the taste component we have 10 local chefs that are utilizing mostly local ingredients to create small plates, and then talks which is a series of panels and discussions related to food,” Morgan said.
Morgan says the educational component was intentional, pointing to the need for more of a community dialogue surrounding food issues. A food writer by trade, Morgan was recruited earlier this year to make food more of a focus at the festival. She is in charge of curating the conversations. Those range from the future of the Idaho Wine industry to a film and discussion about food waste.
“I heard an interview with the filmmakers of 'Just Eat It' and I thought it would be a great fit for Foodfort. Food waste is such an exciting and trending topic and a huge issue both nationally and globally,” Morgan said.
Another aspect of the festival is bringing together a wide variety of people in the food industry to discuss what it means to produce local products.
“We’ve got a panel on Saturday called “Defining Local” and that features a number of members from Boise’s food community,” Morgan said.
Foodfort kicks off Friday and lasts throughout the weekend. A full schedule is available at treefortmusicfest.com.
