The steep drop in oil prices is helping to pad the bottom line of Seattle-based Alaska Airlines. But don't expect lower fares on the horizon.

The intensifying competition between Alaska Airlines and rival Delta Air Lines in the Western skies does not seem to be hurting the bottom line of either company.

The parent company of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air announced strong earnings for the first quarter of the year on Friday.

Residents in Ketchum and Hailey have decided to raise city taxes to subsidize commercial airline service.  

The decision green lights a 1 percent sales tax on lodging and rental cars. Ketchum's vote also adds a 1 percent retail sales tax. Groceries and gas, however, won't be included in this. 

You've probably heard this phrase before when discussing a messy relationship: "It's complicated." Those are the words the president of Alaska and Horizon airlines used Thursday to describe the state of the alliance between the Seattle-based carriers and Delta Air Lines.

The head of Alaska Airlines has choice words for the air traffic controller furloughs that started Sunday. Alaska Air Group C-E-O Brad Tilden today called the travel impact of automatic federal budget cuts "unfathomable."

Sister carriers Alaska and Horizon Air say delays and cancelations have been most noticeable on flights to Los Angeles this week.

Alaska Airlines Apologizes for Delay

Alaska Airline, which has flights to and from Boise,  has experienced delays today.

Company president and CEO Brad Tilden says a power outage in Wisconsin affected he airlines’ internet connection, and its ability to check in passengers. The system is now back up but the airline reports there are long delays for checking in online.
