Word around the Northwest from some vendors is that there could be a shortage of real Christmas trees this year. That could lead to higher prices. But the National Forest Service says they have plenty of trees just waiting for families to take home while also making memories.

In the 2.3 million acres that make up the Payette National Forest, there is a single tree with a major holiday destiny to fulfill. 

The Christmas tree that adorns the Capitol lawn in Washington, D.C., this year will come from Idaho. Now that the snow is melting up high, the hunt for the perfect tree is on.

Finding the Capitol Christmas tree is a lot like what most families do each year, just on a much bigger scale.

Tis the season when Idahoans will be getting their Christmas trees. For some, that means a trip to the Boise or Payette National Forest; a holiday tradition in some families.

Permits to cut down Christmas trees in Idaho forests went on sale this weekend.

The Christmas tree destined for the nation's capital is set to begin a cross-country road trip. But getting an 80-foot tree out of a national forest isn't quite like going to a U-cut.

This year's Capitol Tree is a carefully chosen spruce from Washington's Colville National Forest. And this is no logging operation. 

For starters, this year's tree is on Kalispel Tribe ancestral land. So on the chilly morning of the cutting ceremony, members of the tribe performed a blessing.

A trio of Oregon entomologists has a plum assignment this holiday season. They're heading to Hawaii to help spot pests trying to hitch a ride to paradise on the branches of Oregon-grown Christmas trees.

With Thanksgiving behind us many people are thinking about getting a Christmas tree. Thousands of Idahoans still head to the woods every year to cut their own trees. Permits are now on sale to harvest trees in the state’s ten national forests.

Today marks the 29th annual Saint Alphonsus Festival of Trees.  The tradition of decorating Christmas trees at the Boise Centre runs through Sunday.  Funds raised from the Festival will support the expansion of Saint Al’s Regional Medical Center Emergency Department.

People all over the country plant trees Friday for Arbor Day. And for the past 18 years the Idaho Forest Products Commission has been giving out free saplings. It’s given away more than 350 thousand trees in that time. But the commission has no idea how many of those trees have been planted. Now the commission is trying to find out what’s become of its free trees.
