Editor's note: Author Charles Murray has repeatedly rejected characterizations that he is a white supremacist. We've updated the story to make that clear.

A group that protested an Idaho appearance by U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan earlier this week is planning a different kind of demonstration against a speech by a controversial author this weekend.

Following last month’s election, some form of legal marijuana use is allowed in every state that borders Idaho. The Gem State’s strict prohibition of cannabis – even for medicinal purposes – goes against a national trend of increased access.

The libertarian-leaning Idaho Freedom Foundation advocates legalizing a medical form of pot used to treat disorders like epilepsy. The group’s president, Wayne Hoffman, discussed their position with our Matt Guilhem.

House Minority Leader John Rusche says his campaign sent out political mailers boasting that a free-market think tank ranked him as one of the most conservative Democratic lawmakers in the state.

However, the mailer does not mention that the Idaho Freedom Foundation gave Rusche an F- this year.

The foundation releases its ranking of Idaho's 105 lawmakers every year. Legislators are docked for approving any bills that the groups perceives as growing government, raising taxes or restricting free market practices.

The conservative watchdog group Idaho Freedom Foundation announced a lawsuit Thursday against the Boise School District and its teachers union, the Boise Education Association. Boise State University officials say they will rescind the security fines they placed on a student group for bringing a guns right advocate earlier this year to speak at the campus.

However, university attorney Kevin Satterlee says BSU will not change its event policies as requested by the Idaho Freedom Foundation and American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho has joined the Idaho Freedom Foundation urging Boise State University to reconsider its on-campus event policies.

Earlier this month, IFF officials said they were willing to pursue all options, including a lawsuit, against BSU unless the school revises its event polices. The IFF objects to the way school officials handled a Second Amendment rights event in May.
