Wednesday morning, a senate committee will consider the nomination of an Idaho attorney for a spot on the bench of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court itself has been in the political crosshairs of President Trump.

Idaho Senator Mike Crapo will start his next term in Congress by joining the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Crapo already sits on four committees, Budget, Finance, Indian Affairs, as well as Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. Now he joins the Judiciary Committee.

Crapo will be part of the group that has jurisdiction for judicial and executive nominations - everything from Attorney General to the nation’s highest court. Plus, many district and appeal courts. Crapo says he’s ready to weigh in on a new Supreme Court nominee, to replace Judge Antonin Scalia, who died last year.

An Idaho judge has been confirmed by a U.S. Senate Committee. Now David Nye faces the full Senate. The Spokesman Review’s Eye on Boise Blog reports Nye got unanimous support from the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday for the job of Idaho’s next U.S. district judge.

At least five prominent female Idaho attorneys who applied for the U.S. District Court bench opening haven't been interviewed by the state's two U.S. senators while four men who applied for the job have.

The Spokesman Review reports in a story on Tuesday that U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson, U.S. Magistrate Candy Dale and Boise attorney Terri Pickens Manweiler are among the attorneys who say they completed questionnaires made available by Republican U.S. Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch.

Idaho's U.S. Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch are looking for people interested in becoming Idaho's next federal district judge.

U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge is taking senior status, a semi-retirement in which he will continue to serve the court but his caseload will be reduced. The move means that Idaho could soon have its first new federal judge appointed since 1995, when current U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill took the bench.

U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson has introduced a bill designed to add a third federal judge in Idaho to help offset an expanding and cumbersome caseload.

The Republican says it's past time for Idaho to get a third federal judge.

The federal court system in Idaho is now overseen by two federal judges — B. Lynn Winmill and Edward J. Lodge.

Washington’s State Supreme Court Makes History

Jan 15, 2013

Appellate attorney Sheryl Gordon McCloud considered herself an underdog as she campaigned.
She was running against former Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders.

Today McCloud’s electoral victory will mark the first time in Washington State history that the
court will have both a female majority and a female Chief Justice.

Kellye Testy is the Dean at the University of Washington School of Law. She says Washington’s high court is unique among states- and not in a good way.

Three sitting judges will keep their seats after running unopposed in Tuesday's primary.  For those who voted the unaffiliated ballot, their only choice was to vote for Supreme Court Justice Dan Eismann  and Appellate Court Judges David Gratton and John Melanson.  A few people chose the unaffiliated ballot than the Democratic or Republican one. That could be a problem, says Gary Moncrief.  The political science professor at Boise State says fewer people are likely to vote for judges than in the other races.
