The Snake River Canyon is an iconic landscape -- especially for people who live in central Idaho. And one of our listeners from Twin Falls was curious to know more about how it was formed.

As part of a multi-million dollar project, a new walkway along Canyon Springs Road in Twin Falls will make the Snake River Canyon more accessible to pedestrians.

Along with giving the green light to the footpath, the Twin Falls City Council voted Tuesday to upgrade Canyon Springs Road and install rock-fall mitigation equipment.

In 1974 world-famous daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in a steam-powered rocket. He ended up falling into the canyon on a parachute. To this day, that’s probably what Twin Falls is most known for outside of Idaho.

A jump across the Snake River Canyon is back on, this time with Hollywood stuntman Eddie Braun.

The Twin Falls Times News says Braun will ride a rocket across the canyon in September.

The last attempt to jump the canyon came in 1974 when Evel Knievel tried and failed to make it across.

Braun will launch from private property in Jerome County and land on private property in Twin Falls County.

The saga of two groups with competing plans to jump Idaho’s Snake River Canyon has featured quarreling county and city officials, attempts to draw focus from the other, and a lot of smack talk. The melodrama around the jumps of “Big” Ed Beckley and Eddie Braun had reached the reality TV level -- so the next logical step was obviously to make it into reality TV.

Broadcaster Fox told advertisers Monday it had signed a deal with both jump teams and will air both attempts in a TV special this fall, with the working title “Jump of the Century.”
