Cheryl Waters

Cheryl Waters hosts The Midday Show on 90.3 FM KEXP Seattle, and online at KEXP.org. As the On-Air Events Coordinator, Waters also books the artists that perform at the KEXP live in-studio performances, live remote broadcasts and KEXP events.

Waters has been a DJ at KEXP since 1994. Her knowledge of and passion for music, both new and old, is evident in her diverse shows. She was the music critic for Seattle NPR station KUOW for more than 10 years. In addition to music, Waters is passionate about books and film.

  • The Australian band's playful, psychedelic glam-rock is powered by Tame Impala drummer Jay Watson.
  • The adventurous young songwriter adds live strings and expansive production to her arsenal, though her unmistakable vocals remain front and center.
  • Bianca and Sierra Casady make strange but beautiful music together as CocoRosie. Imagine a cabaret interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien and you're getting close. Listen to the siblings perform four songs from their new album, Grey Oceans, on KEXP.
  • Rawlings arrived at KEXP with a big cowboy hat perched on his head, a guitar in his hand and a song in his heart. With his longtime collaborator Gillian Welch and a band in tow, Rawlings performed songs from his solo debut, A Friend of a Friend.
  • At KEXP, there was no point in resisting Bomba Estereo's infectious groove. Colombian cumbia and champeta rhythms are at the root of the band's sound, while vocalist Liliana Saumet brings wild movement and color to the forefront in this session.
  • Packing KEXP's studio with a wall of sound, The Heavy performs four gritty, funk- and soul-infused garage-rockers. Fronted by versatile singer Kelvin Swaby, the British band kept the walls vibrating, even after it left.
  • When Michael Benjamin Lerner stopped by the KEXP studios with Telekinesis, his songs sparkled with buoyant melodies and catchy hooks that shone like little pop gems. He pounded away on the drums in a frenzy of intensity and joy while singing along without effort.
  • Is it possible to feel sad listening to El Guincho? On a cold winter day in Seattle, when Pablo Diaz-Reixa (a.k.a. El Guincho) brought his Tropicalia-inspired rhythms to KEXP, it was as if the studio had been transformed into a warm beach in his native Canary Islands.
  • Halstead has gone from making warm, fuzzy, distorted noise in Slowdive to dusty Americana in Mojave 3. Now on his own, he plays music with a stunning yet carefree style. Here, he shares his acoustic sound in a session from KEXP.
  • Telepathique is one heck of a sexy band. For 20 minutes, the Sao Paulo-based group turned the intimate space of a KEXP studio into a late-night dance club. The band's combination of electronic beats and rhythms with thrashing drums and live guitar sounds both unique and familiar.
